    Kevin Powell

By Samantha Isaac and Keziah Green

Domestic violence is continuously on the media and on the rise. Recently on the news, a Medgar Evers College student has been severely shot by her enraged husband in broad daylight. A summit at Long Island University organized a community awareness of domestic violence and ways to prevent it.

At the summit it was repeatedly spoken that domestic violence is a problem in the dark. As a guest speaker, Kevin Powell addressed these issues. He quotes that about 84-89% of victims of domestic violence are in fact females and that this problem starts at how society sees masculinity. He gave a scenario of how people would view a man if he were not dominant or authoritative. People called out words like “faggot,” “sissy,” and “wuss” and that battered men cases are hardly brought up into the media.

In an interview of Kevin Powell, he relates his own experience of battering women. He says that God and many years of counseling helped him overcome his problem.
