The Glory Days of Brooklyn Tech Football

B ack when Grease was the must see musical, and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the start of new generation of horror movies, the Brooklyn Tech Football Engineers were the kings of Brooklyn. It was the late 60′s through the early 70′s.

Head Coach Cuzzocrea of ’69 and ’70 teams explained those times as the glory days, saying “tech was a great team back then.” That they were, in those two seasons going 7-1 in ’69 and 6-2 in ’70. Happily they triumphed over other contenders. Today at the homecoming game, many alumni came to fellowship and reminisce about the old days while ’07-’08 Tech Engineers played Grady’s Falcons. The alumni showed they were still in playing form, playing small games of catch on the sideline.

However unlike those times when all was good, Tech struggled on both sides of the ball much to the dismay of the plentiful alumni.

Since the 2004-2005 season when Tech went 6-2 they are sub .500% team and they’ve been getting worse every year. This season, after today’s close loss they are now 2-5 with 2 games left to go in another unsuccessful season.

Today’s nail-biter which was good until the last play could’ve gone either way, offensive misqueues, costly turnovers and bad judgement all contributed to the loss. In the first half, the Falcon’s who are 8th in PSAL rankings struggled to do anything offensively to the Engineers tough run defense. However, the Engineers offense couldn’t capitalize fumbling in the red zone, and starting possessions in bad field position.

Finally Grady’s offense broke through and scored towards the end of the 2nd quarter when RB Ikeem Williams ran it in to give Grady a small 6 point lead. The teams went into half with the score 6-0 Grady.

When the teams came back out for the 2nd half they exchanged plays and the momentum was balanced. This changed when Tech marched down the field then punched one in and made an extra point to make the score 8-6. Nevertheless, the Falcons continued to pound the ball with the running game led by Ikeem Williams. Tech defense began to wear down and Williams couldn’t be stopped and scored with 3:30 left on the clock in the 4th.

Tech tried to respond but Grady’s defense dug in and wouldn’t give up inches and the game ended 14-6. After the game, the Tech coach didn’t want to be interviewed, but after speaking to an Tech assistant coach, he explain how this was a tough loss and small mistakes and turnovers could’ve prevented them from losing.

Hopefully Tech, will use the stories from today’s alumni to inspire them to return to the glory days of the late 60′s and early 70′s and turn their football program around.
